Why it matters

Most QR generators give you a black square.
Ours gives you a brand asset.

A generic black-and-white QR code communicates nothing about your brand, discourages scanning, and looks identical to every competitor’s codes. A designed QR code with your colors, logo, and dot style becomes a recognizable part of your visual identity β€” and studies consistently show branded QR codes achieve significantly higher scan rates than plain ones.

🔒

100% private β€” nothing leaves your browser

All QR code generation happens entirely in JavaScript inside your browser tab. Your URLs, WiFi passwords, contact details, and crypto addresses never reach our servers β€” or any server. Close the tab and the data is gone.

Complete type guide

All 12 QR code types explained

QR codes are not all the same. Each type encodes data in a different format — a WiFi QR must include SSID, password, and security protocol in a specific syntax; a vCard QR must follow the vCard 3.0 spec. Using the wrong type means the scan does nothing useful. Here’s exactly what each type does and when to use it.

URL

Website & Landing Pages

The most scanned QR type globally. Encodes any web address and opens it directly in the phone’s browser on scan. We auto-add https:// if missing. Works for product pages, portfolios, app download pages, payment links, and any web destination. Keep URLs as short as possible β€” shorter URLs produce simpler QR patterns with fewer dots, which scan faster and remain readable even when small or damaged.

💡 Use when: linking physical materials to web content. Works with link shorteners for analytics.
WiFi

Instant Network Access

Scan to connect to a WiFi network without typing the password. Encodes SSID (network name), password, security type (WPA2, WEP, or open), and whether the network is hidden. Perfect for cafΓ©s, hotels, offices, Airbnb listings, and events. Guests scan once and connect β€” no "the password is on the board" conversations. Supports all modern security protocols including WPA3. Hidden networks require the hidden flag to connect correctly.

💡 Use when: sharing WiFi credentials in hospitality, offices, or events without verbal handoff.
vCard

Digital Business Card

Scan to save a complete contact in the phone’s address book β€” name, job title, company, phone (work, mobile, fax), email, website, and physical address. Follows the vCard 3.0 spec, compatible with iOS Contacts, Android Contacts, Google Contacts, and Outlook. The most elegant replacement for a paper business card: scan, tap Save, done. Place on the back of a printed card for a professional hybrid approach that also works digitally.

💡 Use when: networking, conferences, replacing or augmenting paper business cards.
Email

Pre-filled Email Composer

Scan opens the native email app with the To address, Subject line, and email body pre-filled. The recipient just taps Send. Encodes a standard mailto: URI with URL-encoded subject and body. Eliminates the friction of customers needing to find your email and compose a message from scratch. Use for customer support QR codes, feedback collection, event registration confirmation, supplier contact forms on packaging, or anywhere you want an instant email with specific context.

💡 Use when: customer feedback, support contact, or pre-filling structured enquiry emails.
Phone

Direct Dial Call

Scan triggers a phone call to the encoded number, after a confirmation prompt on most devices. Uses the tel: protocol. Include country code (e.g. +1 for US) for international compatibility. Ideal for physical locations (storefronts, ads, vehicle signage) where customers should be able to call with a single scan. Much more reliable than typing a phone number from a flyer. Also useful for emergency contact QR codes on equipment, vehicles, and entry points.

💡 Use when: storefronts, vehicle signage, print ads, or anywhere you want one-tap calling.
SMS

Pre-filled Text Message

Scan opens the messaging app with a phone number and optional pre-written message body pre-populated. Uses the sms: protocol. The customer just taps Send. Popular for SMS marketing opt-ins: "Scan to text JOIN to our VIP list." Also useful for appointment confirmations, delivery notifications, quick customer service channels, and voting/survey systems that run via SMS. Compatibility varies slightly between iOS and Android for the message body parameter.

💡 Use when: SMS opt-ins, appointment booking, quick-response customer service.
Location

GPS Map Pin

Scan opens Google Maps (or the native maps app on iOS) directly to the specified latitude/longitude coordinates. Uses the geo: protocol. More precise than a street address β€” useful for locations without a clean address (event venues, trailheads, beach access points, festival stages). Use “Get my location” to auto-detect your coordinates without manual entry. The resulting QR drops a pin exactly at your coordinates β€” no search required on the scanner’s end.

💡 Use when: events, pop-up locations, outdoor venues, or precise GPS destinations without clean addresses.
Event

Calendar Invite (iCal)

Scan adds an event directly to the phone’s calendar with title, start time, end time, location, and description pre-filled. Follows the iCalendar (RFC 5545) standard supported by iOS Calendar, Google Calendar, and Outlook. No need for the recipient to manually create the event or receive a calendar invite email. Use on event posters, conference badges, product launch invitations, webinar promotion materials, and any printed material where you want frictionless calendar entry.

💡 Use when: conferences, product launches, workshops, concerts, or webinars β€” any event worth calendaring.
Crypto

Cryptocurrency Payment Address

Encodes a cryptocurrency wallet address (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others) in the standard payment URI format that wallet apps recognize. On scan, the wallet app opens with the address pre-filled in the recipient field β€” the user just enters the amount and confirms. Eliminates the risk of mis-typing a long wallet address. Essential for crypto payment terminals, donation pages, NFT artist payment info, and any physical location accepting crypto payments. Supports BIP-21 (Bitcoin) and ERC-681 (Ethereum) URI schemes.

💡 Use when: crypto payments, donations, or displaying a wallet address in a physical space.
Meeting

Video Call Link

Encodes a Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or any meeting URL. Scan opens the meeting directly β€” no hunting for the link in email. Use on printed agendas, conference room booking displays, event schedules, and presentation slides. For recurring weekly team calls, print the QR once and place it on the office whiteboard or meeting room door. When the meeting link changes, generate a new QR and replace it. Takes 30 seconds per link update with no reprinting of other materials.

💡 Use when: conference schedules, office meeting rooms, printed agendas, or hybrid event materials.
App

App Store Deep Link

Encodes a direct link to your app’s listing on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or both. Scan takes the user directly to the install page β€” no searching required. Essential for app marketing: flyers, packaging, business cards, in-store signage, and product inserts. If you want a single QR that works on both iOS and Android, use a smart redirect URL (Universal Link) that detects the device and redirects accordingly. Enter the smart link in the URL type field instead.

💡 Use when: app marketing, packaging inserts, business cards, or any print material promoting a mobile app.
Text

Plain Text Content

Encodes any plain text string β€” no URL protocol, no special formatting. Scan displays the text directly in the QR scanner or sharing sheet without opening any app. Use for short product serial numbers, asset tags, inventory codes, form reference numbers, license plates, access codes, or any identifier that should be human-readable when scanned. Also useful for recipes, short instructions, or any brief information that should display instantly without requiring internet access. Maximum practical text length is 300–500 characters.

💡 Use when: asset tags, serial numbers, inventory labels, short instructions, or offline informational QR codes.
Where to deploy

Where designed QR codes work hardest

QR codes bridge physical and digital experiences. These six industries generate the most QR scans in 2026 — and in each case, a well-designed branded QR code significantly outperforms a plain black square in both scan rate and brand perception.

🍽

Restaurants & CafΓ©s

Replace printed menus with a URL QR on every table. Scan reveals the full menu including daily specials, allergen information, and photos β€” updated in real time without reprinting anything. Add a WiFi QR at the counter for seamless guest connectivity. A vCard QR at the till lets customers save the contact for future bookings. Three QR types, one page load, zero printing costs for menu updates.

💼

Business Cards & Networking

A vCard QR on the back of a printed business card lets people save your full contact details in one scan β€” no typing, no lost cards. Add your brand colors and logo to make the QR match your visual identity. At conferences and networking events, scan-to-save is faster and more reliable than the card staying in a pocket and never being entered. Branded QR codes on cards increase the perceived professionalism of the card itself.

📦

Product Packaging

URL QR codes on packaging link to setup guides, video tutorials, warranty registration, product support, and customer reviews. App QR codes on packaging drive app installs at the moment of purchase β€” the highest-intent moment in the customer journey. Crypto QR codes enable direct payment for subscription refills. Every QR on packaging is a persistent connection between the physical product and digital experience that never expires.

🎉

Events & Conferences

Event QR codes handle the full lifecycle: a Location QR on promotional materials navigates attendees to the venue; an Event QR on the agenda adds sessions to calendars; Meeting QR codes on session slides let attendees join hybrid components; vCard QR codes on speaker slides allow instant speaker contact saves. For multi-day conferences, a single branded QR hub page handles all of these through one scannable entry point.

📋

Marketing & Print Ads

Every print ad is a one-way communication β€” unless there’s a QR code. A URL QR on a magazine ad, direct mail piece, or outdoor billboard turns a passive impression into an active click. Branded QR codes with matching brand colors scan 25–40% more often than plain black QR codes in the same placement, according to multiple A/B tests cited in marketing literature. Use URL shorteners to enable scan-count analytics that justify print ad spend.

🏠

Real Estate

Property listing QR codes on For Sale boards, window cards, and print flyers link directly to the full property page with photos, floor plan, and virtual tour β€” no typing a long URL from a sign. Location QR codes in property brochures open a map pin for the exact address. vCard QR codes on agent business cards enable instant agent contact saves. New residents use the agent’s WiFi QR to connect during viewings without asking for the network password.

Design rules

Making QR codes that are beautiful and reliable

Design and scannability are not opposites — but there are real constraints. A QR code that looks stunning but fails 20% of scans is worse than a plain one. These four design rules, built into the tool as defaults, keep your codes both visually impressive and technically reliable on every device from a 2018 Android to the latest iPhone.

3:1

Maintain at least 3:1 contrast ratio

The QR scanner needs to distinguish dots from background. At a 3:1 contrast ratio (the absolute minimum), scans begin to fail on older devices and in poor lighting. At 4.5:1 or higher, scans are reliable across all conditions. Dark foreground on light background always outperforms the inverse. For branded QR codes with non-black colors: dark navy on cream, deep teal on white, or dark purple on light grey all work reliably. Avoid light-on-light or dark-on-dark combinations regardless of how they appear on screen — printing can shift contrast significantly. Always test the printed output.

H: 30%

Use H error correction whenever adding a logo

QR codes have four error correction levels: L (7% damage recovery), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%). When you place a logo in the center of a QR code, you’re covering a portion of the encoded data. Error correction H allows up to 30% of the QR to be damaged or obscured while still remaining fully readable — this is why logo QR codes work at all. The tool automatically selects H when you upload a logo. Keep the logo under 30% of the QR area. Logos larger than 30% of the total area exceed what error correction can recover, and the QR will fail to scan. The logo size slider in the tool enforces this limit.

SVG

Use SVG for print, PNG for digital

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is the correct format for any print use. SVG is defined by mathematical paths, not pixels β€” it can be scaled to any size from a 1cm label to a 10-metre billboard without any loss of quality. Import into Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, or send directly to a print shop. PNG is a raster format: it has a fixed resolution in pixels. The 1024px PNG export is sharp for screens up to about 12Γ—12cm in print at 300 DPI. For anything larger, use SVG. For websites, social media, and email, 512px PNG is usually sufficient. For retina displays and modern browsers, 1024px PNG looks sharp on any screen up to 4K.

2cm

Minimum print size and quiet zone

The minimum scan-reliable print size for a QR code is 2×2 cm (roughly 0.8×0.8 inches) when scanned at arm’s length (~50cm). For distances beyond arm’s length: multiply by the distance in metres. A QR at 3 metres (outdoor signage) needs to be at least 6cm. A billboard at 15 metres needs at least 30cm — use an SVG export for these. The “quiet zone” is the blank border around the QR: standard requires 4 module widths. The margin slider in the tool adds this padding. Removing all margin is tempting for tight layouts but causes scan failures when the QR is printed edge-to-edge without any surrounding white space. Always keep at least the minimum margin.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Are these QR codes free to use commercially?
Yes — completely free for any commercial use. Product packaging, marketing materials, business cards, restaurant menus, event signage, print ads — no restrictions. No watermarks, no attribution required, no licensing fees. The QR data standard (ISO/IEC 18004) is open; the generated codes are yours to use however you like.
Do QR codes generated here ever expire?
Never. Static QR codes (what we generate) are just encoded data — they have no expiry mechanism. A QR code printed on a business card in 2020 and scanned today still works perfectly. The only thing that can "expire" a URL QR code is the destination URL itself becoming inactive. To make a QR code "updatable" without reprinting, use a dynamic redirect URL (from a URL shortener like Bitly) as the QR destination β€” then update where the redirect points without changing the QR code itself.
What’s the minimum print size for reliable scanning?
The absolute minimum is 2×2 cm (0.8×0.8 inches) for scanning at arm’s length (~50cm). A useful formula: minimum size in cm = scanning distance in metres × 2. A QR at 3 metres (on a poster) needs to be at least 6×6 cm. A billboard at 15 metres needs at least 30×30 cm. Always use SVG export for anything above business card size to avoid pixelation. Add sufficient quiet zone margin — the blank border around the QR is not optional; removing it causes scan failures.
Why does my QR code fail to scan?
The three most common causes: (1) Insufficient contrast β€” foreground and background colors are too similar; try increasing the difference or reverting to dark-on-white. (2) Logo too large β€” if using a logo, make sure it covers less than 30% of the QR area and that H error correction is selected. (3) Printed too small or at too low a resolution β€” use SVG for print and ensure the quiet zone (margin) is intact. Also test with multiple scanner apps and phones; some older Android scanners are less tolerant of stylized dot shapes than others.
Why use SVG instead of PNG for print?
SVG is defined mathematically, not in pixels — it can be scaled to any size from a 1cm label to a 10-metre banner with perfect crisp edges. PNG is raster: the 1024px export is sharp up to about 8×8cm at 300 DPI print resolution. Above that, the PNG will visibly pixelate, making the dots blurry and potentially causing scan failures. Use SVG in Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, or send directly to your print shop. Use PNG for all digital use cases (websites, email, social media).
Can I add my logo and still have it scan?
Yes — reliably, with two requirements. First: keep the logo under 30% of the total QR size (the logo size slider enforces this). Second: use H error correction (30% damage recovery), which is selected by default when you upload a logo. The H level allows up to 30% of the QR’s data to be covered or damaged while remaining fully readable — this is precisely what a center logo does. Use a logo with a white or solid background square behind it to cleanly cover the dots beneath, which looks cleaner and scans more reliably than a transparent-background logo.
How is my data kept private?
All QR code generation happens entirely in JavaScript running inside your browser. Your URL, WiFi password, contact information, crypto address, or meeting link never leaves your device — there is no server call, no API request, and no data transmission of any kind. The QR rendering library (qr-code-styling) runs 100% client-side. Close the browser tab and all data is released from memory. We have no server infrastructure for QR processing and no database. This is not a policy decision — it’s a structural impossibility built into the architecture.
What dot styles scan most reliably?
Square dots (the classic style) are the most universally compatible with all QR scanner apps, including legacy readers. Rounded and extra-rounded styles scan reliably on all modern scanners (iOS Camera, Google Lens, and all major scanning apps). Dots (circular) and classy styles occasionally cause issues with very old Android scanner apps from 2018 or earlier. Star and other decorative styles should always be tested on multiple devices before printing at scale. The rule: the more a dot style deviates from a square, the more you should test before committing to a large print run.
What’s the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
Static QR codes (what VeloTools generates) encode the destination data directly into the QR pattern. The destination cannot be changed without generating and reprinting a new QR code. They never expire, have no tracking, and require no account. Dynamic QR codes (offered by paid services like Bitly, QR Tiger, etc.) encode a short redirect URL that you control. You can change where the redirect points without reprinting the QR. They also track scan counts, locations, and device types. VeloTools generates static QR codes. To get the benefits of dynamic QR codes, generate a VeloTools QR pointing to a URL shortener link, then update the shortener’s destination as needed.
Can I generate QR codes in bulk?
The current tool generates one QR code at a time. For bulk generation (e.g. 500 unique product serial number QR codes), you would need a programmatic solution: the qr-code-styling library we use is available on npm and can be scripted in Node.js to generate hundreds of QR files. For smaller batches (under 20), generating them individually is practical given the live preview speed. A bulk batch feature is on our roadmap β€” sign up to the VeloTools newsletter to be notified when it launches.
