Every popular online background remover sends your photo to a remote server. That means your images can be stored, used for AI retraining, exposed in a data breach, or create GDPR problems for business photos. VeloTools solves this at the architecture level — the AI runs entirely inside your browser.
Once the AI model (~40MB) is downloaded and cached in your browser, you can disconnect from the internet and the tool still works perfectly. No server connection needed for image processing.
Modern browsers run our AI on your GPU via WebGPU. This can be faster than server-based tools with queuing. On Chrome 113+ and Edge 113+, a typical portrait processes in under 2 seconds.
We use the same neural network category as commercial server-side APIs — ISNet salient object detection — compiled to ONNX and executed by Microsoft’s ONNX Runtime Web. No shortcuts, no lesser model. Just a different execution location: your device instead of our servers.
ISNet (IS-Net) achieved state-of-the-art results on DIS (Dichotomous Image Segmentation) benchmarks. It detects foreground objects at multiple spatial resolutions simultaneously — this is why it accurately handles both the broad body outline and individual thin hair strands in a single forward pass.
The network is exported to ONNX format and run by Microsoft’s ONNX Runtime Web. On Chrome/Edge 113+ and Android Chrome 121+, inference runs on your GPU via WebGPU — achieving 16–20× the throughput of single-threaded CPU execution. Older browsers fall back to WASM automatically.
After the AI produces a coarse mask, we run a local alpha matting pass on every edge pixel. Each semi-transparent pixel is re-estimated by projecting its color onto the line between nearby confirmed foreground and background samples — recovering individual whiskers and hair tips the hard segmentation clips.
AI cutouts often have a semi-transparent “halo” of the original background color bleeding into edge pixels. Our decontamination pass samples nearby high-opacity pixels and blends edge colors away from the background. Invisible on white backgrounds; completely eliminates the halo effect on dark or colored backgrounds.

The single most important factor. A person against a plain grey wall produces near-perfect results. The same person against dense green foliage requires significant manual editing. The AI detects foreground by learning what “belongs together” — when subject and background share color or texture, it’s genuinely harder to separate them. For product photography: a white lightbox with a white background will always beat a casual desk shot. For portraits: solid-color walls, studio backdrops, or open sky always outperform patterned interiors.
Blurry subject edges produce blurry AI masks — the model can’t place the boundary if the pixels themselves are ambiguous. A portrait taken at f/1.4 with the face tack-sharp but the shoulders slightly soft will have excellent face edges and mediocre shoulder edges. For product photography: use f/8 or higher to keep all edges of the product in focus. For portraits: focus on the near eye and use at least f/2.8 to keep both eyes and the full head sharp. The AI will deliver a correspondingly sharp, clean mask.
Strong directional light creates hard shadows on the background that look like part of the subject to the AI. A product photographed with a single desk lamp creates shadows the model must guess about. Shoot products with two softboxes at 45° or in open shade outdoors. For portraits, avoid direct noon sun (harsh shadows) and prefer golden-hour or overcast light. Rim lighting — a subtle light behind the subject — actually helps by creating a bright separation line the model uses as an edge cue. Avoid subject shadows falling onto the background at all costs.
When the subject fills 60–80% of the frame, the AI has more resolution to work with at the edges. A product in the center of a very wide shot gives the model only 50 pixels of edge data to analyze. Zoom in so the subject nearly fills the frame. For portraits: shoot from the chest up rather than full-body from distance. For products: frame tightly with 5–10% breathing room. If you need a full-body shot or wide frame, that’s fine — but plan for 1–2 extra Refine button clicks to clean the finer edge detail the AI’s limited resolution misses.
Choosing the wrong export format is the most common mistake after a perfect cutout. PNG on a website bloats page size. JPG for design work loses transparency. WebP in Photoshop won’t open. Here’s exactly when to use each — with zero ambiguity.
PNG preserves the transparent alpha channel exactly as edited. Every edge pixel with partial transparency — including hair strands and soft edges — is stored precisely. File size is larger than JPG or WebP, but quality is mathematically perfect: no compression artifacts, no color shift. PNG is the only format that supports true transparency across all design tools.
Use PNG when the image will be placed on a colored or image background in Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, or print. Use PNG when the subject needs to stay usable on any background without visible fringing. Use PNG for all further editing — it’s the “master” export you work from.
JPG exports a flat image with a solid background — white by default, or any background color you select in the background panel. No transparency, but far smaller file sizes than PNG. WebP is a modern format developed by Google that achieves 25–35% smaller file sizes than JPG and 20–30% smaller than PNG at equivalent visual quality. Use the scroll wheel or zoom buttons to reach 200–400% and trace the full perimeter of your subject carefully. Look for: white or colored halo fringe at hair edges, missing fine strands or whiskers, jagged staircase transitions on diagonal edges, and any dark semi-transparent spots in the background area. The Refine button runs an additional Gaussian erosion pass that cleans persistent halos in one click. The Clean button removes any isolated background specks. This 60-second inspection step is what separates a 3-minute from a 30-minute result — and a professional-looking result from an amateur one.
If your background is a single color — studio white, sky blue, green screen, product photography grey — click once with Smart Erase directly on the background area. It performs a connected BFS flood-fill that removes all similarly-colored pixels connected to the click point in a single operation. This is dramatically faster and more consistent than manually brushing. The contiguous-only algorithm means it won’t accidentally remove skin tones that happen to match the background color elsewhere in the image. For gradient or complex backgrounds, try clicking multiple areas to remove distinct color zones.
When the AI has removed too much: paint back with the Restore brush at 35–50% opacity — build up gradually rather than at full strength. Then use the Erase brush at 15–25% opacity to remove the background-color halo that reappears at restored edges. Alternate between these two passes 2–3 times until the edge looks natural at 300% zoom. This restore-then-erase iterative technique is the professional standard for portrait, pet, and product photography retouching. At 100% opacity you get hard edges; at 20–40% opacity you get the soft semi-transparency that makes hair look natural.
Before exporting, click the dark navy swatch in the Background panel and check for halo fringing. The Refine button removes fringe along the border. Nearly all cutout defects are invisible on white but immediately visible on dark or saturated backgrounds. A result that looks perfect on white may have a 2px white halo that turns into a distracting glow on dark blue. Fix the halo now — it takes 30 seconds — and your cutout becomes truly universal: usable on any background without further adjustment. Then switch back to transparent for the final PNG export.
